Two Time Loser

John G. Young, M.D.

He wanted to win, or so it seemed.

High stakes he bid to be redeemed.

I wanted to win.

I had lost so much.

But win though he may,

he would stay and stay

till all was gone from his pocket.

I wanted to tell you.

Would you be in touch?

That was his way to leave in dismay

for what he sought was not what he got

and what he lost was not what he won.

I wanted you to see

what remained in me.

The game took its toll

but never fulfilled

the emptiness of his heart

or the longing of his soul.

Will I become whole,

or stay in the hole?
